Academic Orchestra of the Colon Theatre breaks down

December 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

For all of you that maybe don´t know, the Colon Theatre is a big ancient Theatre located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which was built in 1908 and is well known all over the world because of his unique accoustic and well known people that have acted there, just like Arturo Toscanini and Luciano Pavaroti. As the building´s really old, the government decided to repair the whole building, and it´s supposed to open on the 25º May 2008, the day when the Theatre´ll be 100 years old but that´s when the problem comes.

The Theatre was supposed to re-open its doors on 25º May 2008 but, as the works that are being done now aren´t going to be finished by that time, he new director of the Colon Theatre decided to cancel the 2008 lyrical season and reject the contracts of all members of its Academic Orchestra for a year. As the government and this institution don´t want to help the musicians that play in the orchestra, it has anounced that the last concert will be held this 8º december. As result of this, one of the objetives of this institution, the formation of world class artists, will be lost, and they´ll find it harder to make a living with that. A prove of that is what said one of the cellists. "If I knew that, I would be working as a waiter instead of practising 10 hours a day" . You can see this problem here:

Here the governor of Buenos Aires talks about making a city with a lot of culture, but it makes no sense, because one of the best music conservatories here, the "Juan Manuel de Falla" is thought to close, and another conservatory, the "San Martin", has a really damaged building that should be repaired urgently, but nobody does nothing here. Look at this, I´m sure you´ll be really surprised when you see how damaged the building is.

That´s funny, because everyone thought that our city would be great, but no. Here making a life with music´s so hard that every single musician that can goes to live abroad.

That´s why a musica universe isn´t possible, at least not here, a country where the government doesn´t care about music.
